Art Therapy - What Is It?

Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that provides a wide variety of art materials.  Art therapy combines traditional psychotherapeutic theories and techniques with an understanding of the psychological aspects of the creative process, especially the affective properties of art making.

Photo of a paintingSliding scale art therapy services for women and children are provided by MUSE, Inc. a 501(c)(3) organization, and a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master of Arts in Art therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. MUSE offers individual or group art therapy sessions on a sliding scale basis for those in need. We help our clients increase insight and judgment, cope better with stress, work through traumatic experiences, restore self-esteem, increase cognitive abilities, have better relationships with family and friends, and to just be able to enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of the creative experience.
