Ancestor Quilt Project

Call for Artists

Subjects

Ancestor Quilt panels made by artists who are Native American are welcome from any and all tribes, whether Full-Blooded or those with just the tiniest scant of Native blood, whether you were raised with your tribe, or, like me, you just found out you're Native American! Even, if you are a non-Native fiber artist and you want to make a panel for a Native American friend or loved one, past, present or future, that's ok, too. This is a spiritual journey which will hopefully reconnect us all with our Native American land. There are three main categories for quilt panel subject images, you can make as many as you you want. Once you begin you may be overwhelmed with inspirations, which is great! We'll just make more quilts. Categories:

1) Ancestors - Make an image featuring your own Native American relatives, or your own particular native American personal Hero or Heroine

2) Herbs & Things - Plants and other materials with significant meaning in your Native Culture

3) Animal Spirits - Spiritual metaphors or animal symbols for your personal spiritual energy

Sizes & Shapes

All panels begin with a background of recycled denim. This can be from old jeans or whatever, faded or not. Just find some that works for you. If you have none let us know we'll send you some! The background should measure around 12" wide and 16" tall. Once you have your picture determined, cut appliqué shapes to recreate your image in fabric, and stitch pieces into place using embroidery stitches such as a short & parallel straight stitch. We are using regular 6-strand embroidery thread. Let us know if you need any fabrics or threads, but these things are pretty readily available anywhere.

The finished panels are then framed with one solid color fabric and followed by one print fabric in about a 1 inch width all around. These are attached with a zigzag or blanket stitch. We are writing the name of the person or plant or animal in the embroidery. These are all handmade, no machine stitching. All panels will be added to quilts, none will be turned away. We want each quilt to have nice panels, then be connected with strips of naturally dyed fabrics, and then stitched to batting and a naturally dyed fabric for backing.

Once finished, we're hoping to show the quilts at a Chicago gallery and then send them traveling across the USA and beyond for people to view, perhaps inspiring more connections with Old Ways to save our Earth.
